According to the Buddha’s teachings, one who lacks good karma and has not purified their previous negative karma is prone to being rejected by others even if they treat other people well. Therefore, a Buddhist should focus on cultivating good karma while confessing all the misdeeds of their past. These could include distaining the virtuous masters, Buddha-dharma, the Three Jewels and those we owe gratitude, or being ungrateful and upsetting one’s elders. One must purify negative karma accordingly. By doing so, we can become persuasive and influential. The following types of people will possess no good fortune: those who upset their parents, the people who love them most in the world; those who disdain and do harm to the Three Jewels, the supreme field of good fortune in the world; those who are ungrateful towards fine teachers and virtuous friends, especially spiritual friends who are reincarnations of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.I often lead my disciples to make confessions. I cannot help shedding tears when I hear of wrongdoings against fine teachers and intimacy with evil friends – this is the greatest sadness in the world!
