In
the Avatamsaka Sutra says, 'People who do not comprehend their own true nature
see no Buddha', On that occasion, the Lord Buddha then spoke this gatha:
'Who
looks for me in form,
Who seeks me in voice,
Indulges in wasted effort,
Such people see me not.'
Who seeks me in voice,
Indulges in wasted effort,
Such people see me not.'
Long
ago in the ancient time, there was a Chan Master became so fed up with his
disciple’s attachment to the concepts of Buddha and Bodhisattva. One day after
long consideration, he told his disciples that if he ever uttered or spoke the
word of Buddha or Bodhisattva, he would go down the stream and wash out his
mouth. And one of his disciples stands up to that occasion and responded,
'Master if you do, I will go down to the stream and wash my ears.'
When
we examine or study all the teachings of Buddha and Bodhisattva, they the noble
ones had never encouraged nor taught their followers to become attached to
their teachings but to put into practice and cultivation to see the nature of
Buddhahood or Bodhisattvahood within the mind. On the other hand, one may
practice and cultivate the Buddha-Dharma teachings for a very long time, as
long as the rising and falling mind keep running back and forth, one will never
understand the origin mind of nature let alone seeing the Buddha or
Bodhisattva. Good Health and Buddha Bless.
