  願一切眾生皆獲樂及樂因;
  願一切眾生皆離苦及苦因;
  願一切眾生永遠不離喜悅;

The Causes 0f Becoming A Wretch According To Vasala Sutta

On one occasion the Buddha was staying at the monastery of Anathapindika in Jeta’s Grove. One day while He was going for alms-round, He arrived at the house of a Brahmin named Aggika Bharadvaja.

At that moment the Brahmin was preparing for fire oblation, and when he saw the Buddha coming to his house he shouted angrily in harsh words thus: “Stop there, wretched mendicant, stop there, wretched mendicant! “

The Buddha stopped and said gently to the Brahmin: “Do you know, O! Brahmin, who a wretch is and causes that make one a wretch?”

The Brahmin answered that he didn’t know them and requested the Buddha to explain them to him. Therefore, the Buddha delivered the Vasala Sutta which explains the meaning of a wretch and causes of becoming a wretch.

(1)    One, who is hot-tempered, grudging, ungrateful, holding a wrong view, and deceitful in order to hide his fault, is a wretch.

(2)    One, who has no pity for living-beings and kill them oneself or makes other kill them, is a wretch.

(3)    One, who besieges and destroys villages and towns is a wretch.

(4)    One, who does not pay back the loan owed to others, is a wretch.

(5)    One, who steals others’ properties, is a wretch.

(6)    One, who kills and robs others, is a wretch.

(7)    One, who bears false witness, is a wretch.

(8)    One, who commits sexual misconduct with others’ spouses, is a wretch.

(9)    One, who does not support and attend to one’s parents, is a wretch.

(10) One, who tortures one’s parents, brothers, sisters and relatives bodily and verbally, is a wretch.

(11) One, who when asked a reasonable and beneficial question, gives a detrimental answer or a crooked answer deliberately hiding the true facts, is a wretch.

(12) One, who keeps in secret the evil deeds committed by oneself, is a wretch.

(13) One, who enjoys the generous treatment offered by others in warm welcome but fails to return the same treatment to others when they visit one’s house, is a wretch.

(14) One, who gives many lame excuses and refuses to donate to donees after inviting them for donation, is a wretch.

(15) One, who speaks harshly without donating anything when bhikkhus come for alms-food, is a wretch.

(16) One, who tricks others with false speech in order to gain something from them, is a wretch.

(17) One, who praises oneself and despises others, is a wretch.

(18) One, who provokes others to quarrel, who neither donates anything by oneself nor appreciates others’ donation, who is mean, pretentious, and has no shame and fear to do evil, is a wretch.

(19) One, who abuses the Buddha, His disciples and other noble sages, is a wretch.

(20) One, who claims himself to be an Arahat although one is not an Arahat, is the meanest wretch.

Why the Buddhist put their palms together

People ask: "Why the Buddhist put their palms together and say to each other 'Amituofo' once they meet?  What does that mean?"

This is a very good question.  Amituofo (Amitabha Buddha) is a kind of blessing from Sanskrit, an ancient Indic Language.  It means, in our modern words, wish you infinitude of life-span and brightness.

Such a blessing actually has deeper implications.  It reminds us that in our lifetime, we need brightness, infinitude of brightness and we have to be straight and selfless towards all beings in the world.  Such implication is very important to us, each time we hear the words, we shall remind ourselves of that.

Cultivation - teaching by Venerable Master Ching Kung

Cultivation is to correct our wrong views, wrong thoughts, wrong discourse and wrong actions towards the life and the universe:
~teaching by Venerable Master Ching Kung

1)
What is cultivation? It is to correct the wrong actions of our mind.
2)
Everyone is able to accomplish perfect bodhisattva path irrespective of the genders, ages, positions or professions. As long as you can keep Buddha in mind and be mindful of Buddha constantly, you are exactly practicing your cultivation in your daily work.
3)
Cultivation is to cultivate your own mind, not others'. Transform Buddha's teachings into your own thoughts and actions; make the reasons in scriptures to become your own state of thoughts. That is exactly cultivation.
4)
Cultivation is to correct our own actions: for the body: no killing, no stealing, no sexual misconducts; for the speech: no lying, no double tongue, no abusive language, no deceitful words and flattery; for the mind: no greed, no hatred, no ignorance.
5)
You should not get attached to the form in your cultivation. You have been attached to the form when you feel that you have accomplished something in your cultivation. Without the attachment to the form you will be able to sever the root of discrimination. To learn Buddhism, you have to cease evilness, cultivate goodness and detach the forms; all the three are the general guiding principles of the infinite dharma gate.
6)
As a Buddhist, you don't have to regret or feel blamed for whatever you have done before, either good or bad. What you have to do is to keep doing no evil and doing only good from now on.
7)
The true cultivation is to work on the mind ground and the volition. Transform whatever thought arising into mindfulness of Buddha; that is to cultivate from the root. To learn Buddhism is to tame your delusive thoughts, which is the supreme joy of life.
8)
It is stated clearly in the scriptures: to accomplish Buddha hood in the Age of Dharma Decline one has to practice Pure Land Buddhism. To truly benefit from Buddhism you have to concentrate on one single practice: concentrate on one single scripture and one single dharma gate. What you need is only mindfulness of Amitabha Buddha and anything else is unnecessary.

The Power of Magic in Buddhism

In the Mahayana Buddhism, venerable Pindola Bharadvaja is one of the Buddha’s sixteen disciples named in The Amitabha Sutra. He was trained under the Buddha’s auspices and he attained the holy fruit of Arahant. Once when in a jubilant mood, he said to the faithful, “Do you think flying in the sky is magical? I will show you some spectacular acts."

Venerable Pindola Bharadvaja then jumped up into the sky, flew all around and performed many other miraculous acts. The faithful and those surrounding at that time were all impressed and praised him without ceasing. However, the Lord Buddha was very displeased upon learning of this incident, he asked the Venerable to come forth and admonished him,  “My teaching uses morality to change others and compassion to save living beings. My teaching prohibit to use magic to impress and confuse people, this is the example of why Lord Buddha refused his disciples to performed magic. Lord Buddha said, you have misused the magic power today and as the results, you are punished for committing this action, I order you to stay in this world to work for more merits and to repent sincerely for this misbehavior before entering Nirvana”

Despite being an Arahant, Venerable Bharadvaja misused his power. As the result, he did not in his lifetime enter Nirvana and because of this, he still has to live and suffer amongst us. The power of magic cannot increase our virtue or eradicate defilement. Therefore, careless use will only build more obstacles to emancipation. It is obvious that magic is not the solution for cycles of rebirth (Enlightenment). Only practicing virtue is the way and steady approach toward the Buddha Path.

The Reclining or Sleeping Buddha

In Buddhism, we may have seen huge Reclining or Sleeping Buddha statues in Buddhist Temples and Monasteries. In truth, Buddha and Bodhisattvas do not have any true form or shape. However due to Sentient Beings like us live in this material world, Buddha and Bodhisattva statues, print of images on paper, cloth, metals casting, stones carving and etc are present throughout the world in a way to remember the qualities of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas though the Enlightened ones had never request nor ask their followers to built nor make one. In the ancient time, images and statues of the past Buddha had paralleled existed during the Shakyamuni Buddha's time. In another way of saying, the images and statues are a personification to abstract inspiration, calmness, enhancing stronger faith in their teachings while we are gazing at them, however we should put forth our sincerity, honesty and truthfully in the practice and cultivation the Buddha path.

There are two different meanings for the Reclining Buddha Statues and to understand the differences we may have to take note the importance of the right arm position. We noticed the right hand is supporting the head as below in the picture, this signifies that the Buddha is resting and is related to the story of the Buddha and the Giant Asurindarahu who wished to see the Buddha but did not want to bow down before him. The Buddha then appeared larger than the Giant Asurindarahu while lying down and then showed him all of Heaven and all of the heavenly figures that were larger than him, the Giant Asurindarahu thus humbling him. Reclining Buddha Statues are frequently very large, and this is possibly related due to the significance of size in this story. This is also the Buddha Image that represents the day Tuesday.

When we noticed the right hand is just below resting on the palm, the picture above, this is The Nirvana Buddha or Reclining Buddha. The Nirvana Buddha reclining posture depicts the Historical Buddha in the last moments of his life on earth, prior to the Buddha dying one last time before entering Nirvana. The ParaNirvana is the term when referring to the life of The Buddha. This is the most "Auspicious" posture of Blissfulness. In his Last Message of the Great Lord Buddha:  'When I am gone, my Teachings shall be your Master and Guide.'

The parting words of the Buddha:
'Appamadena Sampadetha Vaya Dhamma Sankhara'.
'Work diligently. Component things are impermanent.'

This story between Dīpankara Buddha and Shakyamuni

One story shown in Buddhist art stupas has Gautama Buddha (also known as Shakyamuni) in a former incarnation known as Sumedha, a rich Brahmin turned hermit kneeling and laying his long black hair on the ground, in an act of piety that the Dīpankara Buddha could cross a puddle of mud without soiling his feet.

It was the time of the golden occasion of welcoming the Buddha Dipankara to the great city of Rammavati.  The citizens of Rammavati were repairing the road, eagerly waiting for the coming of Dipankara Buddha. While travelling through space, the ascetic Sumedha saw the citizens being engaged cheerfully in road-reconstruction and city-decoration, wondering what was going on below, he came down and questioned them. They answered that they were repairing the road in order that the Buddha and his disciples could tread on it comfortably.

The ascetic Sumedha felt greatly delighted and thought:  "Oh! it's very hard to hear the word 'Buddha', and it is, indeed, harder to become a Buddha."  He requested them to give him a chance to repair a part of the road.

Although the road-repairing could be finished quickly by his supernormal power, he used his own labour with the view that he would earn more merit by using his labour than by using his super-normal power.  Before he finished repairing his portion of the road, the Buddha and his disciples came.  To prevent the feet of the Buddha and his disciples from getting soiled, he prostrated himself on the mud to form a man-bridge.  Among the welcoming people, there was a young woman named Sumitta.  As soon as the young woman saw the ascetic, she was very happy and delighted.  So, she gave five lotus-flowers to him leaving three lotus-flowers in her hands.  The ascetic offered the flowers to the Buddha while lying on the muddy road.

This story between Dīpankara Buddha and Shakyamuni, occurred many lifetimes before Shakyamuni's eventual enlightenment.  From this act, Dīpankara told Sumedha  "In the ages of the future you will come to be a Buddha called 'Shakyamuni'", to which Sumedha replied, "I am to become a Buddha, awakened to enlightenment; may you tread with your feet on my hair - on my birth, old age, and death."
Dīpankara Buddha then said, "Freed from human existence, you will become an effective teacher, for the sake of the world.  Born among the Shakyas, as the epitome of the Triple World, the Lamp of all Beings, you will be known as Gautama.  You will be the son of King Suddhodana and Queen Maya. Shariputta and Moggallana will be your chief disciples. Your caretaker will name as Ananda."

In the 40-plus years of his life after enlightenment, the Buddha Shakayamuni is said to have recounted almost 554 past life stories, (called Jataka tales) of his prior existences. Gautama Bodhisattva is quoted as saying a person starts the journey to become a Buddha filling 10 Paramita or "perfections".  Some sources and scriptures recount that Shakayamuni Buddha was born in the time of Dīpankara Buddha, and was rich and gave away all his wealth to become a Monk. It is said that Gautama Bodhisattva received his first Niyatha Vivarana, (or definite foresighting by a Buddha) from Dīpankara Buddha. This encounter, among many other predictions of Shakyamuni Buddha's future enlightenment, can be found in a Mahayana text named the Sangatha Sutra.

Kamma, The Only Refuge

The Buddha gave a discourse on Kamma to the headman of Asibandhakaputta Village while he was residing in the Mango Grove of the wealthy man Pavarika, in the town of Nalanda.  The headman asked the Buddha thus: “Venerable Sir, the Brahmins of Pacchabhumi said that they could send the dead to deva realms and brahma realms. Can you also do the same?”

The Buddha replied thus: “When you throw a stone slab into water, it will never float in water but sink.  Just like a stone slab sinking in water, evil doers will always be cast into miserable realms.  On the other hand, when you break a pot of butter in deep water, the butter will never sink, but rise and float on water.  Just like the water floating on water, good doers will always be reborn in happy existences.  No Brahma, nor god, and nor Creator can make beings miserable or happy.  No prayers can fulfil the wishes of beings.

It is evident that all beings have only their actions (Kamma) to rely on.  Parents cannot be punished for the crime committed by their children.

The nature of Kamma is deep and profound.  Only when one is endowed with good past and present Kammas, one will be successful in life.  The past Kamma is when one did in the past and so it belongs to one.  Even though one is endowed with good past Kamma, the present Kamma together with effort guided by wisdom is necessary to achieve great success.  The past Kamma cannot be changed; but we can be successful in life with the support of present good Kammas.

In accordance with the Buddha’s Teachings, one makes one’s Kamma the main original base with the right view and support it with wisdom and diligence.  Only then will one become outstanding and successful.  With appropriate time and opportunity, one will become a truly great man.
