Life is Suffering

The Enlightenment of Lord Buddha found the truth that every life being is under control of Laws of Karma. The Laws of Karma is acting by mind. The mind under control of Karma is always clinging to the need of a lot of things to gain pleasure and if that clinging is hopeless the mind will feel unhappy - unpleasure and then feeling suffer.

Lord Buddha found that the suffering will be with the mind since being birth and will be in the mind of every life being since birth, aging until death. It means birth is suffering, aging is suffering, death is suffering, sorrow, lamination, pain, distress and despair are suffering, separated from things liked is suffering, associated with things disliked is suffering, not getting what things wishes is suffering.

Lord Buddha also found that there are five aggregates caused the mind to be clinging.  Five aggregates are:
Form, Feeling, Perception, Mental process and Consciousness.

Lord Buddha found also that all of five aggregates are impermanent, all of five aggregates are not-selves. All processes are impermanent, all phenomenon are not-selves.
Lord Buddha teach all of us are beset by birth, aging and death. We have to meet with sorrows, lamentations, suffering, distresses and despairs, bound by sufferings, obstructed by sufferings

How to avoid or overcome sufferings and despairs?

Only one method, that is practicing spiritual meditation.
Dhammakaya temple teachs the technic of Spiritual Meditation to millions of practitioners successfully around the world and they become followers of temple more and more. This is why Dhammakaya temple grows very fast until BBC World News quoted that it is the largest temple in the world in only 45 years time.

Greatly Beneficial Charity and Less Beneficial Charity

While the Buddha was dwelling at the Jetavana monastery in Savatthi, the female lay devotee, Nandamata, who lived in Velukantati City was offering alms-food to the Samgha headed by the two chief disciples of the Buddha. On seeing this greatly beneficial offering with His divine eye, the Buddha delivered the discourse on charity which can bring great benefits.

A greatly beneficial charity is accompanied with six factors, three factors pertaining to the donor and three factors pertaining to the donee.

The three factors pertaining to the donor are:
(1) The donor is delighted before giving to charity;
(2) His consciousness and volition are keen and clear while he is giving to charity;
(3) He is delighted after giving to charity.

The three factors pertaining to the done are:
(4) The donee is free from attachment (raga) or he is striving to be free from it;
(5) The donee is free from hatred (dosa) or he is striving to be free from it;
(6) The donee is free from bewilderment (moha) or he is striving to be free from it.

The Buddha proclaimed that the charity which is endowed with the above six factors can bear infinite benefits. If one of the factors is missing, the charity will bear less benefit, and consequently it is called less beneficial charity.

Moreover, the charity which is endowed with the following four factors can bring great benefits “immediately”. So it is also called greatly beneficial charity.

The four factors are:
(1) The things to be offered are procured or earned by righteous means;
(2) The conviction and volitions of the donor are keen and clear before, during, and after the offering.
(3) The donee must be an arahant or anagami.
(4) The donee must have just arisen from dwelling in his attainment of absorption in cessation (Nirodhasamapatti).

The charity endowed with these four factors is called greatly beneficial charity because it produces its great benefits in this very life. If one of the four factors is missing, it is not possible to bear benefits “immediately”, and the charity is denoted as the less beneficial charity.

Moreover, the offering endowed with the following five kinds of factors is called greatly beneficial charity. They are:
(1) The donor must be endowed with morality and good conduct;
(2) The donee also must be endowed with morality and good conduct;
(3) The objects of offering must be things acquired by honest means;
(4) The conviction and volitions of the donor are keen and clear before, during and after the offering;
(5) The donor must be one who is endowed with firm belief in Kamma and its results.

The Sigalovada In Pictures E-Book

E-book Link Download The Sigalovade in Pictures E-Book

The Sigalovada Sutta takes place when Lord Buddha encountered a youth called Sigala in his morning stroll. The young man, in drenched attire, prostrated and worshipped the four compass direction (East, South, West and North), plus the Earth (Down) and the Sky (Up). When asked by Lord Buddha why he did so, the youth Sigala replied that he had been told by his late father to do so and he thought that it was right to uphold his father's wishes. Lord Buddha then, based on Sigala's point of view, taught him on how a noble one should worship the Six directions.

The Buddha first describes fourteen evil ways that should be avoided by a householder. The Buddha enumerates these evil ways to be avoided as:

The four defilements of action:
-            taking life (panatipato)
-           stealing (adinnadanam)
-           sexual misconduct (kamesu micchacaro)
-           lying (musavado)

The four causes of evil action:
-            desire (chanda)
-           hate (dosa)
-           ignorance (moha)
-           fear (bhaya)

The six ways of squandering wealth:
-            indulging in intoxicants
-           wandering the streets at inappropriate times
-           frequenting public spectacle
-           compulsive gambling
-           malevolent companionship
-           habitual idleness

The Buddha then elaborated on the importance of having and being a true friend, as he described what true friends are; and what true friends are not; and, how true friends will aid in attaining a blissful life.

Finally, returning to the topic of the six directions, the Buddha described the Four Compass Direction as : parents (East), teachers (South), wife (West), and friends and colleagues (North), and the two vertical directions as: ascetics and Brahmins (Up) and the Servants (Down). He elaborated on how to respect and support them, and how in turn the Six will return the kindness and support.

The Story of the Wealthy Man, Anathapindika (Story Demonstrating the Attributes of the Buddha)

It was the time when the Buddha was spending His second rain-retreat period at the city of Rajagaha that the rich man from Savatthi, Anathapindika went to his brother-in-law Visala of Rajagaha, to sell his locally produced goods, loaded in five-hundred carts.  At a distance of about one yojana before arriving at Rajagaha, Anathapindika sent a message about his arrival in advance as usual to his brother-in-law.

At that time Visala could not welcome his brother-in-law as usual because he was engaged in the preparation of alms-food to be offered to the Buddha and His disciples.

Also Anathapindika, expecting the welcoming of Visala, continued his journey.  Only when he reached Rajagaha, he discovered that Visala was very busy indeed.

When Anathapindika asked Visala why he was so busy, Visala explained to him that he was busy not because of the preparations for a wedding reception nor for preparations of a feast to the King but for the offerings of alms-food to the Buddha and His disciples.

No sooner had he heard the word “Buddha” unexpectedly, Anathapindika was relieved of his tiredness and became extremely delighted.  He was so overwhelmed with delight that he asked Visala up to three times if he had uttered the word “Buddha” and Visala replied that he did so.

Then Anathapindaka told Visala that it was very difficult in this world even to hear the word “Buddha” and requested to let him see the Buddha just now.  Visala told him to visit the Buddha the next day as it was too late already.  His desire to pay homage to the Buddha was so strong that Anapindika forgot everything even to have dinner and to do business.  He went up the seven-storeyed pinnacled hall and laid down on his bed, muttering “The Buddha, The Buddha”.  He could not fall into deep sleep; he remained half-asleep and half-awake.  Whenever he was awake, he thought of the Buddha. It was still dark. As he reflected on the virtues of the Buddha repeatedly, his mind became calm, concentrated and saturated with joy and the rays of light emanated from his body.  Due to these rays of light, he thought that it was dawn and got up three times.  When he woke up for the third time, he saw all the doors of the house were open. So he came down to the ground floor, went out of the house and walked along the main road.  When he reached Sivaka, the city gate, he found that it was already open.  He went out of the gate and stepped into the cemetery.  Rajagaha was a densely populated city.  According to the custom of those days dead bodies were left unburied in the cemetery.  When Anathapindika stumbled over the corpses, he got frightened and the light emanating from his body disappeared.  The whole place became pitch-dark.  The foul smell of the corpses made him more and more frightened and disgusted. Having goose-flesh, Anathapindika wanted to return home. Then the guardian deva of Sivaka cementary encouraged him saying, “Dear friend, the value of one lakh elephants, one lakh horses, one lakh chariots, and one lakh damsels is not as valuable as one-sixteenth of a step of a man who goes to the Buddha to pay homage to Him.  Go on, my friend. It’s of great benefit”.

When Anathapindika heard these words, he was encouraged, thinking that he had some companions.  Fear and dread abated and he again reflected on the virtues of the Buddha.  On account of this, the darkness disappeared and light rays reappeared.  So he went on, and then he saw the corpses and heard the sounds of howling dogs, he felt frightened again.  As soon as he felt frightened, the rays of light disappeared and it became dark again.

So, he thought of going back again. At every time he thought of going home, he heard the encouraging words of deva Sivaka.  And so he went on and on. Finally, at early dawn he reached Sitavana grove where the Buddha recited.  The Buddha was walking up and down mediating in the open air. When the Buddha saw Anathapindika coming, He sat at a suitable place.

At that time, suddenly a strange idea was flashed upon by Anathapindika.  He pondered, “I am mostly known as Anathapindika because I give food to the destitutes.  If He is a true Buddha, He will greet me by calling me by my own name”.  When he approached the Buddha, the Buddha greeted him with calm and clear voice; “Come, Sudatta”. Anathapindika felt pleased and happy.  Then he listened to the discourse given by the Buddha.  At the end of the discourse, he became a Stream-winner.

He invited the Buddha and His disciples to come to Savatthi. When he knew that the Buddha accepted his invitation, he went back to Savatthi and built the splendid monastery known as Jetavana monastery at a great cost.  He donated the monastery to the Buddha and became a lay disciple of the Buddha, and a well-known patron of the Buddha Sasana.
All these marvelous events began with Anathapindika’s deeply reflecting on the virtues of the Buddha.

The above mentioned story provides some examples of the Attributes of the Buddha.  Paying homage to the Buddha, reflecting on the virtues of the Buddha, paying mental devotion to the Buddha who is endowed with major marks and minor marks of a Great Man, etc., are called Buddhanussati Bhavana.  If a person steadfastly concentrates his mind on Buddhanussati Bhavana (It is also a kind of Samatha Bhavana like Anapana), he will be overwhelmed with delightful satisfaction.  Owing to the reflection on the virtues of the Buddha, he will be free from the hindrances such as greed (Lobha), anger (Dosa), etc., and will feel happy bodily and mentally.  His mind will be active and pure. If he keeps on contemplating on the arising and perishing of his delightful satisfaction stage by stage or on the arising and perishing nature of mind and matter, he will attain Nibbana.

对他人的不信任;
对自己的不自信;
对彼此的折磨;
对感情的亵渎;
